ASAR Image Mode 1P data obtained by EnviSat at 20:53 on 27 February 2010.

The long ERS/ENVISAT SAR/ASAR image time series provide a unique systematic means of periodically tracking, retrieving and understanding the frequently dramatic changes undergone by the land cover of large cities in many parts of the world in the past 15 years. In SAR acquisitions, as shown in the image for the case of Rome, the urban features are characterized by a generally higher backscattering due to a double bounce effect of the radar signal.
